Job Description
HEAD OF SCENIC PAINT
Reports to: Production Manager
Oversees: Senior and Junior scenic painters; interns and students as required
Function: To oversee and execute the painting of scenic elements, and be responsible for the safe, efficient, financially responsible, timely and qualitative function of the Scenic Paint department which provides painting and texture for all scenic elements for Drayton Entertainment.
Duties and Responsibilities may include multiple aspects of the following:
- Evaluate preliminary and final set designs and prepare reasonably accurate time and material estimates.
- Interpret Scenic Designer renderings, elevations, colour samples, and research materials, to determine methods and materials to be used to achieve the design, being mindful of time and budgetary constraints
- Determine staffing requirements when additional painters are required to meet deadlines.
- Lead, motivate, mentor, and Supervise all senior scenic painters, junior scenic painters and interns, providing direction and training where required.
- Organize work flows to ensure the efficient use of time, people, and space.
- Create paint samples for all treatments for approval by the Designer, that can be recreated within time and budgetary constraints.
- Execute advanced scenic painting techniques including plastering/sanding/filling/prep/masking; texture/aging and distressing; faux finishes/marbling/woodgraining/ragging.
- Advanced ability in colour mixing and knowledge of paints and coatings.
- Advanced ability to draw, and competently manually reproduce architecture (1 & 2 point); figurative work; and landscapes.
- Proficient ability in backdrops, painted scrims, and cut drops.
- Be able to work at height, and wear prescribed personal protective equipment (i.e. harnesses, respirators, etc.).
- Have the ability to work evenings, overnights, and weekends as scheduled in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
- Upholding the professional image and name of the Theatre in good faith during all dealings with staff, guest artists, the public, suppliers and other theatre companies.
- Abiding by, and implementing all company policies as outlined in the company’s Human Resource Policy Manual.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- University degree or college diploma in theatre production, or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
- Experience managing diverse crew members in a theatre producition environment.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Valid G license.
Term: Full-time in accordance with the collective agreement between Drayton Entertainment and I.A.T.S.E local 828; Immediate Start.
Compensation: $29.11 per hour. As per the Collective Agreement, the successful candidate will be eligible for health benefits and retirement contributions as provided to members of I.A.T.S.E local 828 once conditions are met.
This position is based in person and onsite at Drayton Entertainment’s Production Centre at 145 Northfield Drive W., Waterloo, ON
