Job Description
Duties
Globe Theatre is seeking a Head of Scenic Carpentry to oversee the construction of sets and other scenic elements. The successful candidate is skilled, knowledgeable, flexible, eager to learn, and a collaborative team player. Because building sets under tight deadlines can be demanding, the ideal candidate must handle high-pressure or emergent situations with grace, good humour, excellent communication, and strong conflict resolution skills.
In addition to possessing superior interpersonal, project coordination, and problem-solving skills, the Head of Scenic Carpentry is expected to:
• Be responsible for the safe construction, installation, maintenance, and disassembly of all scenic elements
• Maintain the highest standards of workmanship quality, and attention to detail
• Adhere to all schedules and deadlines as determined by the Technical Director.
• Work with the Technical Director to generate and review cost, labour, and time breakdown documents for each show, making recommendations where appropriate
• Assist in the creation of construction plans and drawings
• Determine safe construction methods and working loads.
• Work with designers to realize their designs as accurately as possible, while reviewing plans with the Technical Director, Production Manager, and Designer as needed
• Schedule & oversee casual crew or trainees; assisting in set construction as required
• Order supplies, materials, and equipment as required
• Track and adhere to all budget guidelines as determined by the Production Manager & Technical Director.
• Work collaboratively with the Head of Scenic Paint, Head of Properties, and other departments as required.
• Adhere to all health and safety policies and procedures, as well as establishing, and maintaining, best safety practices.
• Maintain a clean and organized carpentry shop.
• Recommend equipment repairs, replacement and maintenance as needed.
• Schedule & oversee maintenance work on carpentry shop equipment as needed.
• Attend production meetings, staff meetings, technical rehearsals, and note sessions as scheduled.
• Assist the Technical Director and Production Manager with the planning and organization of all scenic elements leading up to tours and co-productions.
• Adhere to Globe Theatre’s Personnel Policies.
• Adhere to all aspects of the Collective Agreement between Globe Theatre and I.A.T.S.E. Local 295.
• Be a member in good standing with IATSE Local 295, or be willing to transfer or join and maintain membership with IATSE 295 in good standing.
• Liaise with other clients & artists as needed.
• Act as a resource to other arts community members.
• On occasion, train production interns, casual staff and volunteers.
• Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications & Skills• Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• Outstanding collaborator and team player.
• Positive attitude and problem-solving focus.
• Able to work independently and as a team leader.
• Able to safely lift heavy scenery and materials.
• Able to safely work at heights.
• Always maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while being punctual and reliable.
• Previous experience an asset: AutoCad, VectorWorks, Microsoft Office Suite.
• Certifications an asset: Fall arrest, aerial work platform, & first aid.
Special Consideration will be given to:
• Individuals who possess excellent project management skills.
Compensation & BenefitsWage: $31.02 per hour as per IATSE 295 Collective Bargaining Agreement with a minimum of 35 hours per week for the dates listed below. (Subject to ratification by Local 295 of the renewed collective agreement.) Globe offers a competitive benefits package, including health/dental, RRSPs, and PTO. Evening or weekend work may be required.
The Head of Scenic Carpentry is a seasonal full-time position, averaging 9-11 months per year. For our 2026-27 season, the dates of employment are:
August 10, 2026 – February 27, 2027
March 14, 2027 – June 5, 2027, 2027
June 27, 2027 – July 3, 2027
A later start date could be considered for the right candidate.
