ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY: Started in 2024, MADGEN Theatre Festival is a multidisciplinary theatre festival, presenting new Canadian plays focused on community impact through socially engaged topics. The Festival is the culminating project of the Emerging Producers Fellowship - a paid, intensive training program for underrepresented theatre producers (age 30 & under) who wish to stage community-centred and socially-engaged works.

Job Description
EMERGING PRODUCERS FELLOWSHIP: Successful candidates participate in an intensive residency program that provides hands-on training and learning in regards to TOTB’s unique approach to producing community-centred, socially engaged theatre. This training period includes in-person learning sessions with TOTB staff as well as guest facilitators, covering a wide-range of practical administrative skills, as well as sharing insights on the intricacies of production. Producers will also receive one-on-one mentorship from an established Toronto theatre Producer, 2026 mentors are still To Be Announced (2025’s mentors included: Indrit Kasapi from Theatre Passe Muraille, Himanshu Sitlani from Native Earth Performing Arts, Laura McCallum from Outside the March, and Daniel Chapman-Smith from Project: Humanity). These individuals will offer support throughout the program, making themselves available to answer questions, and meet for regular check-ins.
MADGEN THEATRE FESTIVAL: Producers will then apply their learnings as they work collaboratively to produce their individual productions, as well as coordinate other connected components of the three-day Festival. Each producer must select a new, one-act play from the MADGEN’s 2026 Playwright Call to be produced as a staged reading, hiring creative teams, conducting marketing events, and overseeing their budget (provided by TOTB) and purchasing. They will also plan and implement immersive components of the festival, hiring live music, food vendors, and artisans connected to the themes of their show.
POSITION DETAILS: TOTB seeking up to four (4) producers to work closely with the Artistic Director, Production Manager, and Festival Manager, to curate, coordinate and execute all events related to Theatre of the Beat’s MADGEN Theatre Festival, from August 20-22, 2026. Producers will gain experience in arts administration, developing skills and resources related to coordinating teams, contracting, budgeting, communication, curation, digital skills, marketing, and leadership.
Job Title: Producer (4 positions available)
Location: Woodbine/Danforth, Toronto (in person with some remote opportunities)
Salary: $25/hr (made possible through the Metcalf Booster Fund)
Hours: Avg. 35 hrs/week, flexible schedule, generally 10am-5pm (some evenings and weekends may be required)
Length of Contract: 16 weeks (Term: May 11, 2026 - August 28, 2026)

Festival dates: August 20-22, 2026 (producers must be fully available)
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Create job postings, coordinate auditions and contracts, and oversee the hiring of directors, a community dramaturg, and other artists to hire for the Festival
Design and create immersive festival environments for their production, including finding food, music, and artisan collaborators connected to the theme of their play
Support the Creative Communications Manager by coordinating marketing and promotional materials for their play and the Festival
Create a site-responsive guerilla marketing or publicity initiative to promote the show and event
Prepare and collect incoming and outgoing invoices, and oversee the scheduling and budgeting for their productions and aspects of the Festival
Procure necessary equipment and book rehearsal/performance space at Theatre of the Beat’s Toronto office
Assist other Theatre of the Beat staff with Festival-related tasks and workflows
Attend production meetings and take part in overseeing decisions regarding the aesthetic and practical decisions of TOTB and the festival
Act as a public spokesperson for TOTB events, networking activities, and solicitations, including the 15th anniversary fundraiser and Doors Open events
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with or Education in event management, theatre, or arts administration
Minimum 1-year work or school experience working in a performing arts and/or social justice environment
Comfort in video chat applications including Zoom
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to multitask
Knowledge of Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets
Particular consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate a passion and track-record for empathetic and inclusive practices and working with artists from a wide variety of backgrounds, identities, and abilities
Comfort with flexible hours, managing your own schedule - and others, and working remotely
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be:
19-30 years of age
A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
Note: this does not include Student VISAS
Available during the workday (10am-5pm) to attend trainings, auditions, rehearsals, and coworking, and for the entire duration of the festival
