Job Description
The Foundation Treasurer is responsible for managing the financial operations and reporting related to the Foundation’s endowed and spendable funds. This role involves overseeing donor fund activity, investment tracking, regulatory compliance, and preparation of financial reports, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and alignment with organizational and donor expectations. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Foundation Treasurer collaborates with the Finance Department, Foundation Board, investment consultants, investment managers and external auditors to support the strategic financial stewardship of the Foundation‘s assets. This position also contributes to the continuous improvement of financial systems and processes, particularly in areas of gift management, fund setup, cash flow allocation, and compliance reporting.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare financial information for the Board and Investment Committee.
- Guide and be the primary contact for the Investment Committee, the investment consultant and investment managers
- Set up and guide processes for the Board to assess investment managers and investment consultants.
- Review agreements with new consultants and investment managers and coordinate the onboarding of the Foundation with new investment managers.
- Maintain quarterly 'unitization' processes for determining the market value of all tracked donor funds.
- Create a system to track individual donor funds, fund purpose, related Festival activity and payout relative to spending
- Create a system and co-ordinate with other Festival departments to ensure that annual Festival expense budgets, forecasts and actuals for all specific funded activities match the approved payout from the Foundation.
- Prepare financial information for annual Donor Fund Reports and assist in the creation of these reports.
- Prepare financial information for Foundation’s Annual Report and assist the Advancement Department with creation of Report.
- Complete investment purchases for gifts received and investment redemptions for payouts made.
- Prepare ad hoc reports and research as needed.
- Ensure the timely sale of stock gifts and accurate reporting of receipting details for CRA/IRS compliance.
- Manage donation intake and fund setup, including the processing of estate gifts, coordination of donor agreements, and establishment of new donor funds based on review of individual donor agreements.
- Oversee cash and investment flow processes, including monitoring bank and investment account balances and directing cash transfers to appropriate investment managers based on target asset mix.
- Perform routine financial administration, such as booking investment-related journal entries, balancing inter-company accounts, allocating interest earnings proportionately across funds, and processing operating expenses in coordination with the Finance team.
- Lead the month-end and year-end closing processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Lead the preparation and organization of external audit documentation for the Foundation.
- Prepare Annual Tax Return (T3010) and other Charity compliance reporting for the Foundation.
- Ensure regulatory compliance by preparing and filing annual returns and board updates with Corporations Canada, uploading financial statements, and submitting required tax rebates and funding applications (e.g., HST rebate, Heritage Matching Grant).
- Provide financial guidance and support to the Finance Department
- Adhere to the Stratford Festival Health & Safety Commitment and Procedures, and ensure that safe work practices and policies are supported and enforced within reporting structure.

Minimum Qualifications:
- University undergraduate degree (four year program) or equivalent (i.e. BA, BSc, BComm, etc) in Accounting
- 4 to 6 years of related experience
- Preference will be given to candidates with a CPA designation
- Experience in fund accounting or non-profit financial management, considered an asset
- Strong understanding of investment accounting, asset allocation principles, and fund tracking.
- Proficiency with accounting software and Excel.
- Experience with reporting to CRA and other regulatory bodies.
- Familiarity with foundation or endowment structures, including donor fund setup and estate gift processing.
